Excursion to the Village of Axos
We walk up to the village of Axos and get acquainted with the society, the culture and the traditional activities of the locals. Together we explore the history, the myths, the stories and the legends. The village of Axos has been inhabited for more than 3500 years without relocations and still bearing the same name. Its ancient city was one of the most important city-states of the ancient world, famous even beyond Crete. Along this route we initiate you into the small secrets of the village’s labyrinthine paths. We also have the chance to integrate with the locals on the street or at the small traditional coffee shops.
Excursion To The Medieval Monastery Of Halepa
We follow an approximately 7km walking route (in total) within nature accompanied by donkeys and ponies toward the medieval monastery of Halepa where we can admire the astonishing view of the mountains and sea. There we have a snack and return back through the Gorge of the (rare) Cretan Vulture (Gyps fulvus).
Bucolic Excursion To The Shepherd’s House
This is a bucolic excursion in the wild nature of Cretan mountains. We hike up in a dust path which leads up to the mountain, into a beautiful scenery, where Panoysis, the Shepherd, keeps his herd next to the mitato (bucolic haze stone building without joints).
The landscape is magnificent. We will enjoy the view of the mountains and the coast of Rethymnon.
In the mitato place we have a nice lunch prepared by the shepherd’s wife, Aphrodite, in the fireplace and rest until we set out to return back.
